I’m a writer + therapeutic yoga teacher who is deeply passionate about harnessing the power of present moment awareness, every day. To me, it’s truly the portal to possibility and deeper connection with God, ourselves and each other.
I’m also a Highly Sensitive Person, which means I have a genetic trait that affects how I process the world around me, and a nervous system that is very sensitive to internal and external stimuli — especially stress.
I believe that stress management has to be preventative, sustainable, and highly individualized — because we’re all unique individuals having unique experiences, and facing unique challenges on our very unique paths in life. I also believe that it has to address both the physical symptoms and the spiritual symptoms that we so often neglect and overlook.
I believe that rest is incredibly productive — and highly underrated in today’s society. So often we’re speeding up, when what we really need is to be slowing down. We forgo the practices that anchor us in the present moment —pulling us out of our tendency to engage in mental time travel and distract our minds with fixating on the past or worrying about the future.
I believe that learning to surrender to God’s perfect plans and diving timing on a daily basis — and trusting His purpose within every ebb and flow — strengthens us to better weather life’s storms and face the unknown with faith, hope, and courage as our compass. That’s how we’re able to find beauty in unexpected places, and experience those encounters with wonder, curiosity, and joy — even amid those “in-between” spaces in our lives.
I believe that getting to know yourself on a deeper level — and tuning in with your body’s natural rhythms and seasons — allows you to truly meet yourself where you are at any given moment, and offer yourself more of what you need. Deepening our self-awareness also allows us to more proactively invite God to meet us there, too, and rely on Him to protect, provide, and guide — in His steadfast love and abounding grace and mercy.
I believe that we’ve all been put on this earth for a purpose, and tending to all the facets of our being — spiritually, physically, emotionally, and more — is the most powerful way to step into that purpose more fully, and become who we were called to be all along.
Thank you for being here now.
With warmth and gratitude,
It’s always the most challenging seasons in life that are our most formative, isn’t it?
My faith has been a part of my story since the beginning, but I will readily admit that I have a wandering heart. “Prone to wander, Lord, I feel it, prone to leave the God I love” — as the hymn “Come Thou Fount” so aptly depicts.
Far too many times than I would like to recount, I’ve tried to follow my own way, to pursue what I believed would fuel my purpose, bring me peace, satisfy my heart. And as with any good story, I, the protagonist had to get a little lost before I could be found.
Through persistent health challenges, physical pain, energetic burnout and emotional heartbreak, the Lord strengthened my faith in ways I never saw coming. And He relentlessly called me back home — graciously welcoming me with open arms — each time I tried to trust my own true north first.
Because that’s the thing about the compass we choose to follow: it will either guide you to safety and a port of peace, or it will lead you farther off track, into the perilous heart of the storm.
Interestingly enough, those seasons — the ones where I tried to do it all on my own, gripping tightly to the illusion of control — are where I first experienced the stress-induced anxiety and physical and mental exhaustion that prevent so many of us from living our most vibrant lives. I’ve had to learn the hard way that ignoring my mind, body and spirit and what it needs is the fastest track to burnout and crippling feelings of overwhelm.
When we’re fighting our natural rhythms instead of prioritizing practices that allow us to rest and nurture our multidimensional selves on a daily basis, that’s when the scales begin to tip out of balance — and it all becomes too heavy a burden to bear on our own.
When I first encountered the practice of yoga, it seemed to be a concept that was totally separate from my faith — a chasm that only seemed to widen as I delved deeper into my yoga teacher trainings. As I progressed further both in my trainings and my personal practice, I came to realize that my approach to the practice was missing a critical element to really experience the benefits: present moment awareness as an opportunity to more deeply encounter our relational God of love, and pour that love out into the lives of our families, our friends, our communities.
So, I started to experiment with different formats, incorporating breath prayer, meditation on Scripture, and more space for stillness and receptivity. And it totally transformed the meaning and experience of the practice — for me, and for those who decided to embark on the journey, too.
I became more conscious of my energy and attention throughout the day, noting my breath patterns as they correlated with stress, anxiety, fatigue, and my tendency to rush. And what I found most commonly was that when I was moving too quickly, or too busy fixating on the past or worrying about the future, I was holding my breath. And my body responded accordingly by shifting into fight or flight or freeze mode, courtesy of our intelligent sympathetic nervous system.
But when I noticed this pattern, I was able to instead choose to pause and breathe — allowing those deep inhales and expansive exhales to anchor me in the present moment as I paired my breath with the cadence of Scripture. My worries about the past and the future faded into the periphery, and I was reminded of what was real and true right in front of me and within me — and the God who never changes, never leaves — even amid the ebbs and flows.
And out of that metamorphosis, Anchor in the Breath was born.
